Pakistan SC disqualifies dual national lawmakers

The Supreme Court on Thursday declared all lawmakers holding dual nationality as disqualified.

The apex court announcing its brief verdict in the dual nationality case declared all parliamentarians with dual nationality as not qualified to hold a seat in the parliament. 

The court also ordered the disqualified lawmakers to return back the salaried they received from the national exchequer during their term as members of the parliament.

A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Chaudhry, and consisting of Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, announced its verdict today. 

The lawmakers rendered disqualified in result of the apex court verdict include Zahid Iqbal, Farah Naz Ispahani, Farhat Mehmood, Jameel Malik, Mohammad Ikhlaq, Arshad Chauhan, Ahmed Ali Shah, Amna Buttar, Nadeem Khadim, Nadia Gabol and Rehman Malik.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has been declared disqualified with regard to his election in 2008, however, he will continue to hold his office and the Senate seat, which he won recently after he surrendered his British nationality. 

The court has directed all lawmakers to submit their new affidavits. Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi had filed the initial petition in the Supreme Court about the lawmakers holding dual nationality.
