Tennis legend Roger Federer is the highest paid athlete at the London 2012 Olympics, raking in an astonishing US$54.3m over the past 12 months.

The Swiss champ, who earlier this month defeated Britain's Andy Murray in the Wimbledon men's singles final, accrued the cash through a combination of prize money and lucrative sponsorship deals, according to Forbes magazine, which compiled the list.

Elsewhere, Forbes's rankings were dominated by US basketball stars, including LeBron James, who collected US$53m, and Kobe Bryant, who scooped US$52.3m between July 2011 and July 2012.

Tennis stars also featured prominently. Defeated Wimbledon finalist Andy Murray earned US$12m, Serena Williams US$19.8m and Novak Djokovic US$19.8m.

Jamaican Usain Bolt, three-time Olympic gold medallist and the world record-holder for the 100m sprint, was paid US$20.3m.

The Olympics, being held in the British capital over the next two weeks, feature more than 10,000 athletes from 204 nations.
