Amir opponent Peterson fails drug test

Amir Khan’s much-anticipated rematch with Lamont Peterson was put into doubt after the latter failed a drugs test.

According to ESPN, the unified junior welterweight boxing titlist Peterson tested positive for synthetic testosterone following a random test in March, though it was unclear why the results were just made public.

A statement issued by Peterson’s attorney read: “We have tremendous respect for VADA [Voluntary Anti-Doping Association] and its mission. Lamont, [his trainer] Barry [Hunter] and the entire team emphatically support random drug-testing in the most comprehensive manner possible.

“We are working expeditiously with a team of pathologists and other medical specialists. Lamont has never had a positive test either before or after this isolated occurrence and we plan to submit medical findings by close of Tuesday reflecting the actual facts in support of Lamont’s good faith intentions and the requirements of the commission.”

The latest development means that Peterson, who beat Khan for his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles in Washington last December under ‘controversial’ circumstances, will have another storm to deal with and it remains unclear whether the hyped rematch will go ahead on May 19 in Las Vegas.

Khan’s team refused to comment on the issue.
