Supreme Court dismisses Dr Qadri s plea

 Updated :   Wednesday  February  13 , 2013  12:37:07 PM

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry Wednesday dismissed Dr. Tahirul Qadri’s petition seeking reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The bench in its order said that Dr Qadri failed to explain his plea in the case.

Earlier, the bench stopped Dr Tahirul Qadri to continue his arguments. The Supreme Court asked the Tehrik-i-Minhajul Quran (TMQ) as to how his fundamental rights had been violated with the current makeup of the commission.

Dr Qadri complained he was facing media trial and his loyalty being questioned due to the queries of the court. The chief justice said that the court has nothing to do with the media trial.  The Chief Justice said a number of political parties were not part of the current parliament but they had not expressed any reservations on the ECP’s constitution.

The chief justice inquired as to how the TMQ chief had suddenly returned from Canada to question the commission’s organisation, adding that Qadri would have to convince the bench over his sincerity in the matter.

The bench moreover questioned Qadri as to how his fundamental rights had been violated with the current makeup of the ECP.

Dr. Tahirul Qadri waved a photo of the Chief Justice administering oath to former president Pervez Musharraf under the PCO, after which the bench stopped him to continue his arguments.
