DHAKA: Pakistan set a modest target of 263 runs for Bangladesh in the opening match of the Asia Cup one-day tournament here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.
Pakistan made 262 for eight in the allotted 50 overs after Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and put them into bat.
Openers Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed provided Pakistan a sound start of 135 runs but the latter batsmen failed to make a big score.
However, late-order batsmen Umar Gul and Sarfaraz Ahmed added 53 valuable runs for the eighth wicket partnership which helped Pakistan reach a respectable total.
Umar Gul made 39 off 25 balls – the highest score in his 103-match ODI career – while Sarfaraz remained not out on 19.
Hafeez scored a brilliant 89 from 126 runs with seven fours for his 13th ODI fifty while Nasir, included in the team after a long time, made 54 for his fifth half-century in ODI cricket.
For Bangladesh, paceman Shahadat Hossain captured three and left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan two wickets.
